Stress Relief Program

Stress relief strategies are offered to patients as part of Meliora Integrative Medicine's Five-Point Restorative Approach.

Management of stress is an important component of optimal health and wellness. It's important to identify your stressors and determine the effects of stress on your body.

There are two important parts of your nervous system, the parasympathetic and sympathetic.

The Sympathetic Nervous System is responsible for “fight or flight”. It's the stress response.
When the sympathetic nervous system is activated, your body experiences:
  • increased alertness
  • a feeling of energy and euphoria,
  • increased blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate
  • increased muscle tone
  • use of energy reserves
The Parasympathetic Nervous System is responsible for “rest and digest”. It’s the relaxation response.
When the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, your body experiences:
  • decreased alertness
  • a feeling of calmness and relaxation
  • decreased heart rate and breathing rate
  • relaxed muscles
  • increased digestive activity
In order to achieve optimal health, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems must be in balance. Unfortunately, many of us are confronted with multiple stressors. This causes your sympathetic nervous system to be constantly activated, causing the following:
  • increased cortisol levels
  • increased inflammation in the body
  • imbalance of essential hormones
  • impaired digestion
