Many people are not searching for dramatic change from their aesthetic treatments. Instead, they want their appearance to reflect how youthful they feel inside, without looking like a completely different person.
At Meliora Integrative Medicine, we approach cosmetic injectables with intention and restraint. Our focus is not on trends or extremes, but on helping patients in Evanston, IL, achieve results that feel balanced and true to themselves. In this guide, we will explore what cosmetic injectables are, what different types are available, and how our approach keeps you looking fresh and natural.
What Are Cosmetic Injectables?
Cosmetic injectables is a broad category that covers any treatment that’s delivered through a small needle or cannula. Some cosmetic injectables relax muscles. Some add volume. Others stimulate collagen production.
Many patients love cosmetic injectables because they offer a minimally invasive, customizable approach to facial rejuvenation. They can make a noticeable difference in your appearance without the anesthesia, risks, discomfort, downtime or dramatic changes that come with cosmetic surgery.
What Are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are the injectables that reduce unwanted lines by targeting muscle movement. Specifically, they calm overactive muscles in your face that etch lines deeper every time you squint, frown or raise your eyebrows.
Certain muscles in your face become dominant over others. They pull harder and more frequently than they need to, and the skin above them creases in the same spot over and over until those creases stop disappearing when your face relaxes. They transition from dynamic wrinkles (ones that appear when you move) to static wrinkles (ones that have moved in permanently).
Botox is the most recognized neuromodulator by a wide margin. It has more than three decades of clinical use behind it and is FDA-approved for treating crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead creases. At Meliora Integrative Medicine, Botox is one of our go-to options because it has been so reliable for so long.
“But will I look frozen if I use Botox?”
We hear that concern from many patients who are new to neuromodulators and the answer is no, not when the treatment is administered carefully. Dr. Chua and her team use precise dosing and advanced techniques to soften your lines without erasing your expressions. Everything can still move if you want it to, the muscles just won’t be overworking anymore.
What Are Dermal Fillers? How Are They Different From Botox?
Neuromodulators address movement. Dermal fillers address structure. They’re two different tools solving two different problems, but they work together beautifully.
As the years pass, your face gradually loses some of the fat, bone density and collagen that kept everything looking lifted and full in your twenties and thirties. These changes happen slowly enough that you might not notice them individually, but the cumulative effect can make you look drawn or tired.
Dermal fillers are gel-based injectables (most commonly made from hyaluronic acid) that add or restore volume to areas where they’re injected. There are many different types and brands, with Juvederm and Restylane being two of the most well-known names in this category.
“But will I end up with duck lips or pillow face if I use fillers?”
Again, the answer is no. An experienced injector knows where to place the filler, how deeply to inject it and how much to use in order to create a natural result. They take your full facial proportions into account to ensure you look fresh and balanced.
Can Botox and Fillers Be Used Together?
Absolutely. In many cases, the combination produces better results than either treatment alone.
Botox relaxes the muscles that create tension in the upper face. Fillers restore volume and structure in the mid-face, lower face or wherever support has been lost. When these two treatments work in tandem, the effect is harmonious and natural.
At Meliora Integrative Medicine, we frequently use Botox and fillers together in a single session as part of a patient’s comprehensive treatment plan. We start with a full assessment of your face at rest and in motion. We look at how your muscles pull, where you’ve lost volume and how those two factors interact before deciding where to place anything.
Why Does an Integrative Approach to Injectables Matter?
We’re not a cosmetic-only practice. We’re an integrative medicine clinic that also offers aesthetics, and that influences every treatment decision we make. It means we consider factors that a standard med spa often won’t.
We know that how you look on the outside is often a reflection of what’s happening on the inside of your body. Hormonal shifts, diet, stress and sleep quality all affect your skin. When we evaluate you for injectables, we’re also thinking about what’s happening internally.
For example, a patient dealing with hormonal imbalance may see accelerated volume loss that would benefit from fillers, but addressing the hormonal piece alongside the cosmetic one produces a better and longer-lasting result.
Patients who are working with us on IV nutrient therapy, targeted supplementation or hormone optimization often find that their injectables look better and last longer because their body is functioning at a higher baseline. That’s the advantage of a practice that doesn’t treat your face in isolation from the rest of your health.
What Should You Expect During a Cosmetic Injectable Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a conversation. We’ll ask you what’s bothering you and discuss what different treatments can realistically accomplish. After we’ve agreed on a treatment plan, we’ll move on to the injections.
For Botox, the injections take about 10 to 15 minutes. Most patients go back to their day immediately afterward. You’ll start seeing results within a few days, with full effect settling in around two weeks.
Filler appointments tend to take a bit longer. You’ll see volume improvement immediately, though some swelling is normal for the first 48 hours. Final results emerge over the following one to two weeks as everything settles into place.
How Long Do Cosmetic Injectable Results Last?
This varies by treatment type and by your individual physiology.
Botox typically lasts three to four months before the treated muscles gradually regain their full range of motion. Some patients find that if they stick with consistent treatments, they can eventually extend the interval between appointments because their muscles have been “retrained” to relax.
Dermal fillers have a wider duration range. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last six to 18 months. Some can last up to two years. Areas with more movement (like the lips) tend to metabolize filler faster than areas with less movement (like the cheeks).
